About the Author
James S. Walker James Walker obtained his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the University of Washington in 1978. He subsequently served as a post-doc at the University of Pennsylvania, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of California at San Diego before joining the physics faculty at Washington State University in 1983. Professor Walker's research interests include statistical mechanics, critical phenomena, and chaos. His many publications on the application of renormalization-group theory to systems ranging from absorbed monolayers to binary-fluid mixtures have appeared in "Physical Review, Physical Review Letters, Physica," and a host of other publications. He has also participated in observations on the summit of Mauna Kea, looking for evidence of extra-solar planets. Jim Walker likes to work with students at all levels, from judging elementary school science fairs to writing research papers with graduate students, and has taught introductory physics for many years. His enjoyment of this course and his empathy for students have earned him a reputation as an innovative, enthusiastic, and effective teacher. Jim's educational publications include "Reappearing Phases" ("Scientific American, "May 1987) as well as articles in the "American Journal of Physics "and "The Physics Teacher," In recognition of his contributions to the teaching of physics, Jim was named Boeing Distinguished Professor of Science and Mathematics Education for 2001-2003. When he is not writing, conducting research, teaching, or developing new classroom demonstrations and pedagogical materials, Jim enjoys amateur astronomy, bird watching, photography, juggling, unicycling, boogie boarding, and kayaking. Jim is also an avid jazz pianist and organist. He has served as ballpark organist for several Class A minor league baseball teams, including minor league affiliates of the Seattle Mariners and San Francisco Giants.

Powerful, brilliant expose of mid-20th century truths

I'm not surprised that By Love Possessed has received such polarized views from readers. It's not an easy book to digest: it has a baroque, almost arcane style and features views of race, religion, and homosexuality that are quite uncomfortable in today's age. Yet it is a novel that I cherish.
Cozzens' novel covers 49 hours in the life of Arthur Winner Jr., a small-town Pennsylvania lawyer who has prided himself for living his life according to a strict regimen of reason and yet finds all those around him seemingly throwing their lives away to emotion. Rape, suicide, jealousy, and greed mark the behaviour of his friends and relatives, much to his consternation. Not until the end, when a deep secret is revealed, does Arthur Winner realise that an emotional reaction is sometimes the only recourse to an unreasonable situation; indeed, it may be a neccessary reaction.
Because of its style and conservative stance, I've always been surprised that By Love Possessed was such a huge bestseller when originally published; perhaps its title and small-town setting confused readers that it was another Peyton Place (which, ironically, it replaced at #1). But it IS an incredible book, very influential (just read anything by Scott Turow), and a must read for those who want to understand the mindset of the middle-class American male in the mid-20th century. Personally, I find Cozzens' prose fascinating--the more a book makes me reach for the dictionary the better. And as a gay man, I take less offense at Cozzens' occasional prejudices than I do with those politically correct readers who only blindly see bigotry and not a man truly trying to understand the world around him.

The most troublesome book I've ever read

I was 17 when I read this book the first time, and it blew me away. I went about quoting it and recommending it to friends for years. Ironically, I read it as a highly intelligent affirmation of love.

When I was in my 20s, I read it again and was aghast. Suddenly I saw it for the conservative, insular 1950s sort of book that it is. And worse, I saw that the central theme is that we ought to be suspicious of love because it can possess us and cause us to behave irrationally.

Now I'm three re-readings past that, and maybe I'm ready to put Cozzens in perspective. It isn't a giant of a book that deserves the close attention I've given it, nor is it merely a period piece that can be dismissed as dated bigotry. If you can't appreciate a book that is tainted with the dated morality of an earlier time, you don't deserve the pleasures of reading a novel like this one that is so insistently intelligent and interesting.

Ultimately, the star of By Love Possessed is the interior monologue of the central character (although the voice of Julius Penrose is actually closer to the heart of the novel than is the voice of Arthur Winner). What a fascinating voice that is. Robustly intelligent, skeptical, humorous, bold, sympathetic but knowing . . . it is a voice that takes ultimate delight in understanding human beings and pondering (often with an ironic smile) why they do what they do.

A liberal who basically believes in love, I have that voice stuck in my head, and I long ago realized I would have to accept it as part of me. This brilliantly plotted novel gives that voice countless opportunities to make deliciously perceptive comments on the human comedy. Then--as befits such a smart reflection on human nature--the voice itself is dumped on its butt and shown to be bumbling and self-deluding.

A great book? Nah. A great read, I'd say, and in a few years I'll enjoy sharing those astonishing 49 hours with Arthur Winner again. I improve my ability to see people with each reading.

A master craftsman and conservative novelist

First of all, Cozzens remains an impressive manager of his material. Multiple plots and personalities weave tightly through the work, and just when you think that the novel is nothing but a big pile of disconnected pieces, Cozzens turns just a couple of corners and the whole things snaps into place in a stunning moment of revelation. It's masterful craft, and both emotionally and intellectually moving.
On top of that, Cozzens manages to write for grownups in a world where compromise, settling, and just muddling through are sometimes as heroic as it gets-- sacrifices must be made, and it's NOT always a bad thing. If you find Steinbeck a tad too mushy, Hemmingway too mannered and ballsy, and Fitzgerald too melodramatic, this underappreciated author may be for you, and this novel is a great place to start.

About the Author
Joey Yap is the founder of the Mastery Academy of Chinese Metaphysics, a global organisation devoted to the teaching of Feng Shui, BaZi, Qi Men Dun Jia, Mian Xiang and other Chinese Metaphysics subjects. He is also the Chief Consultant of Joey Yap Consulting Group, an international consulting firm specialising in Feng Shui and Chinese Astrology services.

Joey Yap first began learning Chinese Metaphysics from masters in the field when he was fifteen. Despite having graduated with a Commerce degree in Accounting, Joey never became an accountant. Instead, he began to give seminars, talks and professional Chinese Metaphysic consultations around the world, and has become an avid property investor who also holds an interest in diverse businesses. Two pages of actual information about you

I know Joey Yap as a master of various Chinese Metaphysical subjects and I respect him very much.
But this book contains only 2 pages of information about key aspects of your life like personality, career, business, relationships, family, health and academic pursuits. It gives you a general outlook in life and a little bit of advice contained in short paragraphs with a lot of white between them. This little bit of information is no more than 2 pages.
But the book contains 243 pages? Yes it does, but for every 'Life Stem' and 'Door' pairing you have about 200 pages filled.
The rest is introduction, chart plotting and general explanation of what Qi Men is, but not the actual destiny information.

Also he says that this book only talks about the most important part, but not everything.
You only have information about your day stem paired with your personal door but there is much more to be analyzed.
You have 4 stems in a BaZi chart and you have pairings of the stems with the doors, stars and deities and also the stem interactions.
All you get in this book is a general explanation of your life stem (day master in BaZi) paired with your personal door.
This is very little information.
He also says that if you want to know everything, you have to seek help from a master or join him in a class which is in Malaysia.
So if you don't jump on a plane and pay a decent amount for the lessons in the class or if you don't go to the local Qi Men Dun Jia master or the one next door, you won't know everything.
To me this book is another one of those commercial books who only give you a small percent of info to keep you interested and want to go further.
But you don't get the big picture.

So if you want a book that contains 2 pages (not fully filled) with general outlook and a little bit of advice about your life, then this is the book for you. Those 2 pages however do contain correct information. At least when I was reading my own Qi Men destiny.

Farmer's (A Girl Named Disaster; The Ear, the Eye and the Arm) novel may be futuristic, but it hits close to home, raising questions of what it means to be human, what is the value of life, and what are the responsibilities of a society. Readers will be hooked from the first page, in which a scientist brings to life one of 36 tiny cells, frozen more than 100 years ago. The result is the protagonist at the novel's center, Matt a clone of El Patron, a powerful drug lord, born Matteo Alacr n to a poor family in a small village in Mexico. El Patro n is ruler of Opium, a country that lies between the United States and Aztl n, formerly Mexico; its vast poppy fields are tended by eejits, human beings who attempted to flee Aztl n, programmed by a computer chip implanted in their brains. With smooth pacing that steadily gathers momentum, Farmer traces Matt's growing awareness of what being a clone of one of the most powerful and feared men on earth entails. Through the kindness of the only two adults who treat Matt like a human Celia, the cook and Matt's guardian in early childhood, and Tam Lin, El Patron's bodyguard Matt experiences firsthand the evils at work in Opium, and the corruptive power of greed ("When he was young, he made a choice, like a tree does when it decides to grow one way or the other... most of his branches are twisted," Tam Lin tells Matt). The author strikes a masterful balance between Matt's idealism and his intelligence. The novel's close may be rushed, and Tam Lin's fate may be confusing to readers, but Farmer grippingly demonstrates that there are no easy answers. The questions she raises will haunt readers long after the final page. Ages 11-14.

LOOK at those award medals!

You will find this in the YA or the Juvenile section but don't let that keep you from reading it. If I could give it 10 stars I would. This National Book Award Winner is one of the best near future sci-fi thriller novels written in the past few years. Early in the novel, Matt discovers he is a clone in a future where clones are thought of as little more than animals. Matt is the clone of a very powerful drug lord, and because of this, he enjoys a much more comfortable life than most. Matt learns a lot in the course of the novel...perhaps the most frightening of these is that there are many reasons for cloning one's self. I hear a lot of people review books and say things like "a page turner" and "you won't want to put it down." I read a lot and usually don't have too much trouble putting a book down if something else catches my eye or if it's late at night. This one kept me up until three a.m. This "Newbery Honor" is head and shoulders above the winner of the medal for 2003. (Crispin isn't even in the same league as this book). This is also head and shoulders above most SF books of 2003! Give it a look you won't be sorry!

A winner for middle school and up, both male and female readers

This is YA fiction at its best: an epic story about life-changing events and human strength, appropriate for middle schoolers but totally readable for any teen or adult reader, and a book that can be enjoyed by male or female readers. The protagonist, Matteo, is male, but the story is universal and not to be missed by any literature fan. This is one of those books that can change a middle schooler from a non-reader to a reader.

The story unfolds gradually, as we learn about Matt and his life as a clone, a second-class citizen, growing up in the sprawling mansion of rich and powerful feudal drug lord El Patron, the man from whose DNA Matt was cloned. Matt is unsure of his place in the world, and he needs to learn about the inner workings of the household and its members, the robot-like people who farm opium, the politics of the land El Patron rules between the US and Mexico, as well as Matt's own purpose in life (why did El Patron make a clone? Is Matt his ultimate heir or is there a darker purpose?). The reader is along for Matt's journey of self-discovery, as he figures out who to trust and where the real truth lies. Along the way, Matt finds love as well as boyhood friendship and bonding.

There's an important lesson in here about the fate of those who grow up inside cults: When Matt figures out what is right and wrong in the world, will he be able to make the right choice and reject the powerful but evil man who brought him into this world? What if your hero is a kind man to you, but reviled by the rest of the world?

Another interesting aspect of the story is the way the future echoes the past. In the futuristic world of House of the Scorpion, some places have reverted to the dark ages, with feudal lords ruling over people who can do nothing but farm the land. Students of history will have an interesting time contrasting the future portrayed in this book with the "evils" of the past.

The epic story of Matt's childhood, personal growth, and his final destiny makes for great reading. This is highly recommended to readers of all ages. My one complaint is that it starts a little slow, and the majority of the action is packed into the second half, so if you are having trouble getting into this book, I implore you to charge on, because the journey is very worthwhile. In addition to the national awards bestowed on this book, it was also the RI Teen Book Award winner for 2005.

Science fiction that's too close to believable.

The House of the Scorpion, written by Newberry Honor book author, Nancy Farmer, has earned the National Book Award and is a Junior Library Guild Selection. An excellent example of literary merit, this novel draws you into its unique settings and expansive characters. You truly feel as if you are lost in the Poppy Fields in the midday heat on El Patron's estate or coughing and itching along with Matt as he endures months of captivity in a room filled with chicken litter and roaches. Farmer's characters are so believable you find yourself feeling compassion for a clone, and anger at those who treat him as anything less than human. Farmer cleverly uses figurative language and understatements to slowly build your curiosity and the suspense. You struggle along with Matt as he attempts to understand his purpose and what those who love him are trying desperately to convey to him.
"So many hints! So many clues! Like a pebble that starts an avalanche, Matt's fear shook loose more and more memories. Why had Tam Lin given him a chest full of supplies and maps? Why had Maria run from him when they found MacGregor's clone in the hospital? Because she knew! They all knew!"
The characters never are able to tell Matt directly what he so desperately wants to know.
"They're looking for you everywhere.....They've sent bodyguards to comb the stables and fields..... `Why are they looking for me?' (Matt desperately wants to know.) `You have to know. Tam Lin said you were too clever not to figure it out.' Matt felt turned to stone. The bodyguard evidently gave him more credit than he deserved. Matt hadn't figured it out- not really-until a few minutes ago."
Although this book has a science fictional flair to it, it appeals to a wider range of readers including those who enjoy suspense and mysteries. As well as, readers who are not afraid of controversial topics like cloning, drug lords, brain-deadened eejits and wealth that surpass morals and the laws. Within a classroom, this book could be used to stimulate discussions on present day controversies of cloning, stem cell research as well as nature vs. nurture, since Matt and El Patron had the same DNA however turned out to be very different people.

The rapidly emerging field of glycomics has revealed the importance of carbohydrates in a myriad of cellular processes including metastasis, inflammation, signal transduction, and infection. The chemistry and biology of carbohydrates are intimately linked and feed into the interdisciplinary field of glycobiology, which has received increased attention over recent times. The book consists of 12 logically and clearly organized chapters, each beginning with a broad introduction to the topic of discussion before providing a detailed account of the area. The authors use clear and concise language, which allows new and potentially difficult concepts to be easily understood. Recent examples from the literature are appropriately incorporated and are complemented with figures and schemes that are well produced and easy to follow. Each chapter culminates in comprehensive reference sections that not only contain seminal reports but also numerous publications from the past decade. The subject index is very thorough and allows one to navigate to a topic of interest quickly. Several key features incorporated in this text are also worth mentioning. The authors' clever use of footnotes throughout the book provides the reader with several informative snippets relating to the main text. Examples include short biographies on leading researchers whose work is under discussion and nomenclature clarification. Overall, this book provides a broad account of the topics under discussion. As can be expected for a book of its length (474 pp.), some sections lack detail; however, the authors use appendices to provide the reader with references to a plethora of detailed monographs on individual topics.

About the Author
Robert Stick is a Queenslander by birth and completed his undergraduate and higher degrees at the University of Queensland. Following post-doctoral studies with Ray Lemieux and Sir Derek Barton, he took a faculty position at The University of Western Australia in 1975 and has since spent sabbatical leaves with Bert Fraser-Reid (Duke University), and with Bill Cullen and Steve Withers (both of the University of British Columbia).

Mr. Newman holds an advanced degree in structural engineering from the Moscow Civil Engineering Institute in Russia, and a master’s degree in business administration with high honors from Boston University. He is the author of the Bestselling Metal Building Systems, also from McGraw-Hill, and a number of award-winning articles that have appeared in leading engineering publications. Additionally, he conducts continuing-education seminars on metal building systems for design professionals sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers and other organizations, and teaches at Northeastern University.

A good handbook for a difficult subject

This book is well organized and presented. It covers a lot, and is more comprehensive than other books of its type. It has very good material on concrete design/repair, and also covers wood structures, steel, and pre-engineered buildings quite well. The material on masonry is also good, but a discussion about rusted steel lintels embedded in masonry would have helpful, as this is a common source of problems in 20th century buildings. There are few handbooks that come as close as this one to a thorough treatment of the subject, and it is a useful book for architects and engineers who deal with renovation.

A Pragmatic Building Restoration Guide -- at Last!

While this text explores renovation of a wide variety of building systems -- reinforced and post-tensioned concrete, wood, steel, masonry -- from a structural engineering perspective, it is quite pragmatically written and a non-engineer will derive considerable benefit from it. The book provides an excellent and detailed guide to critical issues that are confronted in period restoration, including making transparent best practices for undertaking the investigative process to evaluate salvagable components and structures for each type of building system. Lots of good ideas for refurbishment

A comprehensive book but with some strange omissions: very little on foundations or restrained brickwork. Also, the section on FRPs looks like it came straight out of a contractor's brochure. But these don't really detract that much. Strongly recommended.
