Never Kiss A Stranger, by Madeleine Ker

Laura Golightly expected her trip to Europe would be pretty dull. After all, helping out an elderly writer on a publicity tour isn't exactly a thrill a minute. On the other hand, trying to stop a cat burglar may be a bit too exciting. Especially if it's her heart he's trying to steal!

Unbelievable Plot!
By Manga Maniac Cafe
Laura Golightly is traveling around Europe, the assistant to a romance writer. Finding her employer, Mamie Pendergast, a demanding and self-centered woman, Laura is forced to smooth things over with people they meet, time and time again. When Mamie's hotel reservations for her favorite suite are lost, they have to settle for another room. When a cat burglar creeps into their suite, Laura is determined to save Mamie's manuscript. When he steals a kiss instead, Laura finds herself falling in love, and also into danger!

This was silliest book I've read in a while. The plot wasn't remotely plausible, from the president of an airplane design company stooping to cat burglary, to the muddled plot twist involving stolen blueprints and terrorist organizations. I found the idea of the army allowing a civilian to lead the charge to save the kidnapped heroine rather ridiculous, though Caesar did look rather fetching clutching a semi-automatic rifle...

The art saved this book. With crisp, graceful lines, it held my attention much better than the lame plot. The panel layouts complimented the story, and Mayu Kasumi used large images every effectively. If for no other reason, flip through this book to enjoy the gorgeous artwork!

Silly and not really worth your time
By Ryner
Working as a live-in personal assistant for an author, Laura is awakened one night by the sound of someone breaking into their hotel suite. When she yells for help, the masked burglar kisses her to keep her quiet, then leaves. Who is he and what was he looking for?

Laura is a pretty but empty-headed, naïve and self-deprecating - the most annoying kind of heroine(?). I picked this up because Madeleine Ker is the pseudonym of one of my favorite authors, Marius Gabriel. It was my first foray into graphic novels in which the book is read back to front, which made for an interesting experience but took some getting used to. Disappointingly, it confirmed my suspicion that pulp romance written by a talented author is still empty, unfulfilling, pulp romance, even when "printed in flirty pink ink!"

The Roman revolution, by Ronald Syme

The Roman Revolution is a profound and unconventional treatment of a great theme - the fall of the Republic and the decline of freedom in Rome between 60 BC and AD 14, and the rise to power of the greatest of the Roman Emperors, Augustus. The transformation of state and society, the violent transference of power and property, and the establishment of Augustus' rule are presented in an unconventional narrative, which quotes from ancient evidence, refers seldomly to modern authorities, and states controversial opinions quite openly. The result is a book which is both fresh and compelling.

Excellent. But
By JC
Excellent. But, if you are not schooled in classics or Roman literature, you will be lost. This was produced by a highly educated and skilled scholar of the topic. Plus, this was originally written during a period when classics was a vital part of education.

This novel is exceptionally fun. It's got the perfect mix of adventure, romance and humor. It's just fun reading--totally entertaining and witty. Antonelli has achieves great "voice" with his main character and it feels like you're listening to a friend from the first page. It pulls you right in. Read it!

A fresh voice in the action-adventure genre
By Werner A. Lind
This book wasn't on my radar until a friend recommended it. But it proved to be well worth the read --and further demonstrates that there are independent authors out there producing quality work, and who aren't getting the notice they ought to. J. C. Antonelli is one of these! Hopefully, this review will give you an idea of whether or not the book would be up your alley. If so, the novel has the added advantage of being a stand-alone; reading it won't suck you into a long series.

This is, unabashedly, modern pulp action-adventure, with a kick-butt female protagonist. That doesn't mean it's without serious moral reflection or psychological depth; it has some of both to offer. (Although it has a 17-18 year old protagonist, its significant bad language, sexual content, and violence mark it as an adult read, not a YA --though there are certainly teens of both genders who'd read it avidly.) It doesn't stint on the physical action (with a high body count) though, nor on the gripping suspense. The snappy prose style and short chapters, and the storyline itself, compel the reader to keep turning pages; if I'd been able to, I'd have read it at one sitting. (And I did finish it in about a week, which is a pretty quick read for me!) It's too bad fiction by independent authors is ignored by Hollywood as fodder for adaptations, because this would make a stem-winder of an action flick, which would probably be a box office smash.

We open with our heroine/narrator Samantha ("Sam") wounded and bleeding in a fleabag Bucharest hotel room, waiting for shadowy killers to close in and try to finish her off. (But she's got two pistols, and she's not going down without a fight.) From there, she goes back a year to tell the story of how she got here, to the summer before her senior year of high school. Not having a driver's license yet, to get out of the house and fight boredom, she got her dad to take her for an outing at a shooting range, using a coupon that came in the mail. That experience revealed that she has a natural talent for handling firearms: quick reflexes, a keen eye, and an instinctive ability to aim accurately, that would place her probably in the 99th percentile for naturally-gifted shooters. This evokes a LOT of attention, because this range happens to be a clandestine screening tool used for recruitment by a super-secret quasi-government agency. Its mission is the targeted assassination of large-scale evil-doers whose power and position makes them untouchable by legal channels --and they have a job in hand for which a pretty 17-year-old girl might actually be what the operation's profile needs.

"Laid-back California girl" Sam's a wonderfully drawn, complex, round and dynamic character, as real as any girl her age you might meet at your local mall. Yes, she's flawed. She's the product of her culture in some ways, with its prejudices and blind spots; she has a potty-mouthed speaking style, and has the issues that come from losing her mom at a very young age and growing up raised by an inept and emotionally distant dad (whom she truly loves, but whose faults she realizes). But she emphatically isn't the borderline "sociopath" the organization's psychiatrist considers her. True, when she thinks it's justified, she's quite capable of killing without any emotional distress. However, she has genuine feelings and a conscience, a respect for innocent life, and people she cares about; and she approaches what she's asked to do from within a serious moral framework. And while, like most of us, she can't help taking pride in doing something she's good at (which, in her case, is lethal combat), she doesn't revel in hurting people as such --she's compassionate even towards enemies' pain. Having had to take a lot of responsibility from a young age, and natively smart (she scored 2200 on her SATS), she's also more mature and grounded than many teens are. But she's a believable teen, and a believable teen girl (I raised three, so I know something about the demographic) --not, as some critics snidely say about action-oriented female characters, especially those created by male writers, an essentially male figure disguised as female.

While Sam's the only character whose head we get inside, Antonelli is able to make the rest of the cast (especially Tico) vivid and life-like as well. His plotting is taut, driving, well-constructed and twisty --complications, both logistical and emotional, are going to ensue. Though the book most definitely isn't a comedy, he understands the uses of comic relief, and Sam's wry narrative voice and quirky (sometimes off-color) humor provides it at times, as do the inherent incongruities of the situations. Being a keen and accurate observer both of herself and others enhances Sam's effectiveness as a narrator. We have a variety of physical settings here, all brought to life pretty well, but the description is never intrusive. The author clearly knows his weaponry (though he calls magazines "clips" --but that's a common mistake), and writes clear, exciting action scenes; he doesn't over-stress the gore of violent death --it is what it has to be, but he doesn't rub our noses in it. Moral reflection about the ethics of extra-legal, vigilante killing in particular cases is serious, and adds depth to the book. (I fault Antonelli there only for his dismissal of religious ethics as supposedly completely pacifistic, but hypocritical; it's simply not true that all or most religions are blindly pacifistic. Christianity in particular has a long tradition of balanced consideration of the claims of both love and justice, and protection of others, in a very flawed world.) Finally, the book puts Sam through a wringer of tough moral choices and emotional stresses that really challenge both her and the reader --I consider that a hallmark of superior fiction.

A few quibbles and issues are worth noting (besides the language --I lost count of the f-words, though there's no religious profanity). Devout Catholic readers will be apt to be very offended by a passing thought of Sam's about the Mass, evoked by a stressful mental comparison between the sight of red wine and of blood (though to a girl ignorant of theology, the whole idea of deliberately drinking blood really would appear "crazy"). Being strongly pro-life, I disagreed completely with her advice to a pregnant friend to abort the baby; but it was well-intended advice --and the fact that her friend has the baby anyway makes a statement of a different sort, as well. Her passing comment near the beginning that it would be wrong to assassinate Mother Teresa, but okay to do Rush Limbaugh (and by implication, anyone with right-of-center views) will sit poorly with those whose views are right of center.

Also, the idea of "insta-love" can be a problematic issue for readers, and there's a romantic component here that develops in a quick time-frame. Honest love between two people has to have a basis, and that takes some time to develop and build. But the amount of time can vary with the people and circumstances. For the two principals here, their prior experience with the opposite sex has been largely fallow and unsatisfactory, and there's a mutual perception that they want something different than what they've been offered in the past; the attraction is based on personal qualities rather than just physical appearance, and the circumstances are of the sort that would stimulate quick bonding. I don't automatically believe in relatively "insta-love" just because an author wants to throw it into the plot; but I didn't have a problem believing in it for this couple. (Although there's no explicit sex in the book, some non-explicit unmarried sex does take place; but it came across to me as being loving rather than exploitative and lewd.)

Just buy it, already!!

This book is so funny, I'm still laughing! It's witty and smart and just flat out funny. But that's not all! It's got great characters, an exciting plot, and plenty of suspense! I couldn't put it down! Can't wait to read more from Antonelli!

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up–This dictionary is both too modest and too boastful: it condenses hundreds of myths and includes deities, heroes, saints, historical figures, animals, etc., with connections to art and literature, yet it is hardly exhaustive. Double the length of Tresidder's Dictionary of Symbols (Chronicle, 1998; o.p.), it preserves that work's format and adds a brief bibliography. Most of the author's Symbols and Their Meanings (Sterling, 2000) is also found here. Marginalia include primary-source citations and cross-references. Violet backgrounds distinguish 60 short articles on such diverse topics as Trojan War heroes, the Buddha, angels, avatars of Vishnu, dance, liberty, the jaguar, and more. The book includes many non-Western myths and symbols, but a broad perspective in some articles is lacking. The features on architecture, chastity, the ages of man, and religious orders are entirely European in focus. Many articles–e.g., on music, floods, fish, dragons, death, creation–are culturally broader. Africa deserves better coverage. Small black-and-white and/or violet graphics–useful, if not compelling–appear on most pages. Clare Gibson's Signs & Symbols (Grange) and Miranda Bruce-Mitford's Illustrated Book of Signs & Symbols (DK, both 1996), though less complete, will attract browsers with their color photos. Hans Biedermann's Dictionary of Symbolism (Facts On File, 1992) is better illustrated, more detailed on Western symbols, less global; Tresidder's volume offers high value for cost, if there is a myth/symbol gap on the reference shelf.–Patricia D. Lothrop, St. George's School, Newport, RI

From Booklist
This is the first symbols source to be labeled complete, although the introduction does not specify the qualities that make it so. Its 2,000 entries are twice the number found in other resources on the topic, such as Tresidder's 1998 Dictionary of Symbols: An Illustrated Guide to Traditional Images, Icons, and Emblems (much of which is duplicated in the newer book). The alphabetically arranged entries focus on classical and Christian symbolism but encompass other traditions worldwide. In addition to traditional symbols (e.g., objects, animals, flowers, shapes), the volume includes legends, themes, or concepts important for understanding systems of symbols and historical, mythological, or religious figures. It also includes brief references to the use of the symbol in art. For example, the entry alchemy is identical to that in the Dictionary of Symbols except for a reference to the depiction of alchemists in Vasari's painting The Alchemist's Laboratory. The Complete Dictionary's articles range from a few sentences to one-page panels on more comprehensive topics (Colours; Elements; Music, musical instruments). Its format is similar to Dictionary of Symbols, with see references and sources placed awkwardly in the margins, where they might be missed. Bibliographical references are minimal; most cite only basic sources such as Psalms 42:1 for Stag or Pliny the Elder's Natural History for Phoenix. A geographically arranged bibliography at the end of the volume includes a good selection of older, classic texts on art, mythology, and religion. Illustrations are in-house drawings from original artifacts rather than actual photos. The Complete Dictionary of Symbols is an acceptable reference book for home and small libraries and for public libraries that need a symbol source for general readers. It overlaps very little with the fascinating, graphically oriented Symbols.com (a free Internet source). It is unnecessary for larger collections that already have scholarly sources such as Carl G. Liungman's Dictionary of Symbols (Norton, 1994), Hans Biedermann and James Hulbert's Dictionary of Symbolism: Cultural Icons and the Meaning behind Them (Facts On File, 1992), and Anthony Stevens' excellent, thematically arranged Ariadne's Clue: A Guide to the Symbols of Humankind (Princeton, 1999). The Simple Beauty of the Unexpected: A Natural Philosopher's Quest for Trout and the Meaning of Everything, by Marcelo Gleiser

Marcelo Gleiser has had a passion for science and fishing since he was a boy growing up on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro. Now a world-famous theoretical physicist with hundreds of scientific articles and several books of popular science to his credit, he felt it was time to connect with nature in less theoretical ways. After seeing a fly-fishing class on the Dartmouth College green, he decided to learn to fly-fish, a hobby, he says, that teaches humility. In The Simple Beauty of the Unexpected, Gleiser travels the world to scientific conferences, fishing wherever he goes. At each stop, he ponders how in the myriad ways physics informs the act of fishing; how, in its turn, fishing serves as a lens into nature’s inner workings; and how science engages with questions of meaning and spirituality, inspiring a sense of mystery and awe of the not yet known. Personal and engaging, The Simple Beauty of the Unexpected is a scientist’s tribute to nature, an affirmation of humanity’s deep connection with and debt to Earth, and an exploration of the meaning of existence, from atom to trout to cosmos.

Review
"Beautifully composed . . . This elegant treatise will inspire readers who relish a philosophical approach to science and travel."  —Library Journal

“Altogether excellent.” —Brain Pickings

Review
“The fly-fishing is naively beautiful. The physics is just beautiful. But the conclusion to the journey of a man so engaged by both―the epiphany―is magnificent and should be shared by us all.” (Jeremy Lucas, European Open fly-fishing champion, author of Presentation Fly-Fishing and The Last Salmon)

“The Simple Beauty of the Unexpected is an elegantly written, introspective, and thought-provoking meditation on growing up as someone curious about the universe. It’s a wonderful introduction to the human side of science and the scientific side of being human.” (Sean Carroll, author of The Big Picture: On the Origins of Life, Meaning, and the Universe Itself)

“Whether teasing apart the known, the unknown, and the unknowable in science, or immersing us in the natural world of Brazil or Iceland, Marcelo Gleiser’s words sing on the page. You don’t have to fish or seek out spiritual experiences to love this book (I do neither). I was absolutely delighted with Marcelo’s joy in nature, with his reasons for not eating meat, and with the wonderful surprise for all animal lovers at the end of this compelling and highly personal narrative.” (Barbara King, author of How Animals Grieve)

“With wit, charm, humor, and passion, Gleiser pulls off that rarest of catches―connecting the most fundamental and sublime aspects of science with the most intimate and ordinary experience of fishing. From a river in Iceland to the Large Hadron Collider near Geneva, Gleiser seamlessly pulls together disparate themes of life and questions of meaning. Full of warmth and deep insight, The Simple Beauty of the Unexpected is a meditation on human significance in a vast Universe that is full of both fish and stars.” (Adam Frank, professor of astrophysics, University of Rochester, and NPR commentator)

Science, fly fishing and autobiography in an engaging potpourri.
By Winston A. Ostrow
This is an eloquent exploration of the human situation from the perspective of an eminent scientist turned fly fisher. It illustrates the old saying that new fishermen start out wanting to catch the most fish, then the biggest fish, and finally are satisfied to just see the River. (He discusses the gendered reference in "fisherman," finding it acceptable on esthetic grounds.) Professor Gleiser carries the last stage of the fisherman a bit further, suggesting that the enlightened abandon fishing altogether. Only time will tell whether that ultimately satisfies him. I suspect not, although he offers an ethical rationale for his position. His final position seems unrealistic to me in that only a fisheries biologist is likely to master the intricacies of trout habitat and life, absent the incentive of actually fishing for them. It also seems he had an in-born (dare I say it?) propensity that makes vegetarianism attractive as an ethical position. However, he also displays a predatory propensity to fish, so we'll see which propensity ultimately wins out. I hope he writes on the subject again, maybe 10 or 15 years down the road. Although he rejects the compromise that catch-and-release fishing offers, in so doing he gives short shrift to his predatory side. I suspect somewhat the same impulse underlies scientific inquiry, so perhaps his science gives him a different outlet. But, can the impulse be fully subliminated? The book is as much about his scientific world view as about fishing. That genre is also familiar, although this example is skewed toward physics rather than biology, giving it a different twist from the usual one. I like physics, so I enjoyed that. The discussion is general. It assumes some previous exposure to the subject at a lay person's level. Someone lacking a rudimentary exposure to quantum physics in particular might find that discussion a little challenging. But, that's only a tiny part of the book. The personal, biographic details are interesting, especially regarding his youth in Brazil, and also illuminating as to Dr. Gleisser's world view, which is less deterministic and more skeptical about science itself than typical in a scientist. He cites a wonderful, personal experience as the basis for this. Despite my quibble with the conclusion, I enjoyed the book. It is very well written. It makes you think. Fly fisherpersons with a taste for science will enjoy it. Those uninitiated in fly fishing who like science will also enjoy it as the fishing portions of the book are not technical.

Theoretical physics, flyfishing for trout and autobiography blend. Self discovery and discovery in science.
By lyndonbrecht
This book has three intermixed themes--theoretical physics, fly fishing and autobiography. Gleiser was born in Brazil, has a PhD from a British university and has been a professor at an American Ivy League school for more than twenty years. He writes: "In my life--and in this book--the fishing is mostly a conduit to the outer world of natural phenomena and the inner world of the self."

As an adult he acquires an interest in fly fishing (trout). This is difficult to describe if you have not read the book, but it echoes a boyhood interest in fishing. The chapters are built around places he goes to give talks but also to fish--England (Lake District), Italy (Tuscany), Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul) and Iceland (Laxe River). Each of these places is different and yet the same, the relationship of fisher and fish, two different worlds of air and water interconnected. He becomes more expert and more appreciative, with fly fishing mentors coming into the mix.

He also mentions briefly his sport of obstacle running and Spartan racing (I had to look these up--sounds more like Marine training that a sport!).

Each chapter is also about an aspect of physics that he was invited to speak about at a conference. These cover a very wide range of physics, from some history of physics, the Big Bang, particles , string theory, origins of life and the prospect of life elsewhere in the universe. He describes science as good at the How and When questions but not useful in the Why question. We have one planet to support us and we're not going to solve things by leaving the mess behind us and rocketing across the cosmos for new planets.

Along the way, he discusses personal loss, climate change, and varieties of agnosticism. In the last section, the Iceland chapter, he has a sort of epiphany about fly fishing. I won't describe it here because it's an important point the book builds to and in a sense it would be like giving away the ending in a mystery novel. I don't want to take away some of the surprise a reader might have.

Tender Violence: Domestic Visions in an Age of U.S. Imperialism (Cultural Studies of the United States), by Laura Wexler

Laura Wexler presents an incisive analysis of how the first American female photojournalists contributed to a "domestic vision" that reinforced the imperialism and racism of turn-of-the-century America. These women photographers, white and middle class, constructed images of war disguised as peace through a mechanism Wexler calls the "averted eye," which had its origins in the private domain of family photography.

Wexler examines the work of Frances Benjamin Johnston, Gertrude Kasebier, Alice Austen, the Gerhard sisters, and Jessie Tarbox Beals. The book includes more than 150 photographs taken between 1898 and 1904, such as photos Johnston took aboard Admiral Dewey's flagship as it returned home from conquering Manila, Austen's photos of immigrants at Ellis Island, and Beals's images of the St. Louis World's Fair of 1904.

In a groundbreaking approach to the study of photography, Wexler raises up these images as "texts" to be analyzed alongside other texts of the period for what they say about the discourses of power. Tender Violence is an important contribution not only to the fields of history of photography and gender studies but also to our growing understanding of U.S. imperialism during this period.

Review
Wexler has forged a genuinely new method for the use of photographic images as primary resource material. This book is a true landmark in the field of American studies.--Technology and Culture

A remarkable book that skillfully interweaves the traditionally separate realms of domesticity and foreign policy. Wexler's brilliant analyses of photographs and texts reveal how women's work of producing domestic images contributes to the production of national power at home and abroad. Tender Violence will profoundly change the way we see photographs through the lens of gender and the way photographs yield an intimate vision of imperial power.--Amy Kaplan, Mt. Holyoke College

A politically sophisticated analysis of photographs as portrayal and betrayal. . . . [Reveals] the necessity of theory that goes beyond the discrete deployments of gender, race, class, and ethnicity formulas.--Journal of American History

This book is a rigorous and outstanding examination of gender as a key contributor to specific visual outcomes. Tender Violence is a most welcome addition to the literature and is highly recommended for upper-division undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, and interested general readers.--Choice

Superb.--Feminist Studies

[Shows] extraordinary scholarly imagination and acumen. . . . Wexler provides 'a means of seeing' photography that is so productive of insight as to almost reach past or out from the putative frames of her study. All those interested in a 'means of seeing' photography, domestic sentiment, imperialism and reform and seeing them as linked will be reading and rereading her wonderful book.--American Quarterly

Tender Violence lays bare the symbiotic ties between domestic vision and U.S. imperialism and reveals with painful precision how what these women did with their cameras served to impose and fortify social hierarchies. Wexler's readings of photographs are astute: stunning examples of how attention to formal details can open into social narrative. This is one of the most beautifully architected academic books I know. Its portraits of early photographers and discussions of individual images build upon each other to produce a rich and ample sense of time and place so that reading it has often felt like inhabiting a world.--Karen Sanchez-Eppler, author of Touching Liberty: Abolition, Feminism, and the Politics of the Body

In this fascinating study, [Wexler] probes the imperial logic lurking behind the domestic surfaces of over 150 photographs taken in the decades surrounding the turn of the twentieth century. . . . Removing the benign mask of these images by situating them within the discourses of racism, imperialism and eugenics, Wexler offers a groundbreaking account of how some of America's first women photojournalists became complicit with America's imperialistic project.--Women's Review of Books

From the Inside Flap
Laura Wexler presents an incisive analysis of how the first American female photojournalists contributed to a "domestic vision" that reinforced the imperialism and racism of turn-of-the-century America. The images vary from Jessie Tarbox Beals' s pictures of the World's Fair of 1904 in St. Louis to Alice Austen's photos of immigrants at Ellis Island. Wexler also examines other women photographers of this period including Gertrude Kasebier, Frances Benjamin Johnston, and the Gerhard sisters.

Interesting!
By Kristen
This monograph was a requirement for one of my graduate seminars. Although I was "forced" to read it, I believe this book does offer an interesting perspective. At times, her interpretation seemed to be a bit of a stretch; for example, she "read into" a white divider between a photograph of a man and a photograph of a woman- some times a white border is simply a white border, in my opinion. However, for what it is worth, I do recommend this book.

Read with a critical eye

Overall, a good book to explore both the benefits and potential pitfalls of applying semiotics to the study of history. Wexler provides good insights as well as a number of highly questionable interpretations (particularly of the photographs on the Olympia). If read with a critical eye, the reader will profit from being forced to examine the potential importance of images on our perception of history.

Power and art are not separate
By cactus writer
Wexler writes clearly, skillfully interspersing history, sociology, and photography to argue that domesticity was some CREATED, not just "always there" in the US. Wexler especially emphasized the role of photography in supporting a discourse of white women's purity and black slave women's (or newly freed black women's) down-to-earth, animal nature. An excellent book for all students of art, social science, or history, this text can be used for undergraduates or graduate students.
