About the Author
Karen Mahony founded baba studio with Alex Ukolov in 2002. Their work has since appeared in numerous design magazines and New Age publications in the USA and Europe. She has also published many articles on both tarot and design, with a reputation as one of today's most accessible and enjoyable tarot writers. Irish by origin, she lives in Prague.
Alex Ukolov is an artist and designer specializing in traditional Russian styles and techniques. With two degrees in Art and Design he has also taught decorative miniature painting. Originally from the Crimea, he currently lives in Prague, where he runs baba studio with Karen Mahony.
Sophie Nussle is a former aid worker and has been gathering and carrying her stories and tarot cards from the UK and Switzerland to Congo, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Iraq, Ecuador, Israel, the United States - and many other countries, real and imagined. She is a lifelong lover of French 19th Century art and literature and grew up on Grandville illustrations of Les Fables de La Fontaine and Gulliver's Travels - which might have inspired her own life. She won the BBC World Service Award for Short Story of the Year in 2000 for Buried Bananas, a story about a Rwandan genocide survivor. She lives in Geneva and finds inspiration for story characters sitting in that multi-cultural city's many coffee shops.
Jean Ignace Isidore Gérard, alias Grandville, was born in France in 1803. At an early age, he began working as a magazine illustrator and theatrical costume designer. In 1829, at the tender age of 26, he became famous for his Métamorphoses du Jour, featuring caricatures of humans with animal heads. In 1838 he was asked to illustrate Swift's Gulliver, which became one of his most celebrated illustrated books. He died in an insane asylum in 1847, and is now regarded as a founding father of Surrealism.

Oui! Se Fantastique!

[Okay, so I don't know french] I DO know that this deck is appropriately named. I LOVE this deck! When I first got it I couldn't stop looking at it. It sticks to traditional Tarot imagery, but in a funny, sometimes slightly twisted way. The artwork is truly Victorian in feel and the cream color of the borders of the cards give them that old parchment feel. The "animal people" depicted are truly unique and each one is given such character. The creators did such a great job of capturing artist Grandville's unusual style. My only criticism--and it is a small one--is that the cards are thinner than most decks which can make it a tad more challenging to riffle. But I am NOT about to remove a star for a little riffle trifle. In fact, if I could ADD a star, I would.
Bottom line--if you love Tarot, Grandville, Victorian art, and/or humor, BUY THIS DECK. In my opinion it's a "must-have" addition to any collection.

Lovely but I expected more.

I was one of the last to obtain this deck at a reasonable price before it fell into the expensive web of limited supply/much demand. I bookmarked the kit about a year back when I should have just bought it. Next time I checked back the price had shot way up. I had given up hope on ever owning this deck (because I'm not going to pay over $150 for a tarot deck no matter how cool it is) when I found the deck all by itself with a LWB was available for about $25.
I'm happy to have the deck and the pictures are gorgeous but the cards themselves are quite flimsy and the back of each one has a flat-ish lackluster design. If the producers had taken this deck to the next level with those details it would have really made the difference. I have the flower oracle from this company as well. Those cards are just a tad less flimsy but the back has a more interesting design that has a shimmery effect.
Seems like Magic Realist has a lot of great decks that are getting bought up quick so I'm surprised they took such a cheap route. I'd rather pay a few more bucks for better quality. It's important that cards be of high quality for obvious reasons. They're being handled a lot and part of the magic of card readings is what you see and feel in a card.
Love them but I had to keep it real about the quality.

This deck is a very beautiful piece I am happy to have in my collection.It is not only a tarot deck,but also a funny way to get to know a great artist's work.There is a story behind each card witch plunges you into the old times atmosphere.
