Stay, by Jennifer Sucevic

Last year, Cassidy Jameson tanked her freshman year at college. It was nothing short of a- Huge. Epic. Fail. Instead of focusing on classes and her sport, she ended up cracking under the pressure and losing everything that was important to her. After spending nine long months trying to piece herself back together again, Cassidy is now starting over at a new university. It’s a place where no one knows about the anxiety she suffers from or the mistakes that sent her careening out of control. It’s a fresh start where she can finally get her life back on track and prove to her family, not to mention herself, that she’s not a total screw up.

So this year, there’s no room for anything but academics. And yeah, she’ll humor her childhood friend and roommate, Brooklyn, by going to a party or two, but she has zero interest in getting caught up in that lifestyle again. She’s not about to make the same mistake twice by becoming unfocused.

It’s unfortunate that someone didn’t mention that to a certain hockey playing hottie because he just won’t take the hint and leave her alone. As much as Cassidy hates to admit it, if she has a type, Cole Mathews definitely fits the bill perfectly. With his dark shaggy hair, golden brown eyes, muscular arms, and those damnable dimples of his- he's absolutely gorgeous. Oh, and did she just so happen to mention his hard wide chest? Yeah... totally dreamy. Er... if she were the dreamy sort, that is. Thank goodness she's not. To make matters worse, he's ridiculously easy going. And yeah, she’ll come right out and say it- nice.

Definitely kryptonite material.

Which makes him much too dangerous for the likes of her and this year, she's smart enough to know it. Even though resisting him seems futile, that doesn't mean she isn’t going to try her damnedest to do it.

This Novel is intended for readers 18+. *Language & Sexual Situations*

Sweet and Refreshing
By Lexar
It was nice to read a college story where the hero isn't sleeping around and both of the main characters are decent people. There was a good balance between a focus on school, on hockey, and on the relationship. The one thing that I would have liked to see more of and hope to see it in the next book is the friendship between Cassidy and Brooke. It was mostly underdeveloped except for one moment towards the end and I would have liked to see them connect and talk about things other than boys.

The only other thing that I didn't like was Cassidy's relationship with her family. She made mistakes, yes, but I feel like no one ever really told her that the worst of it wasn't her fault. She shouldn't feel ashamed of having one night stands, because there isn't anything wrong with it. And she also shouldn't blame herself for how her relationship with her family stands. It seemed to me that she not only sacrificed the most, but she also suffered the most. To have her also take on the responsibility for being estranged is just unfair. I wood understand her parents being upset at how things at Dartmouth turned out, but quite frankly the way they handled things is just bad parenting. It almost sounds like Cassidy had to seek therapy out herself. One thing that most definitely needs to happen farther down the line in the series is an apology from her family, and they have to admit that what they did was wrong. No tearful hugs and suddenly everything is okay. They need to be not only adults, but also parents and take ownership that they nearly destroyed their eldest daughter.

Other than that rant, I did enjoy the book and I love Cole. Like I said, it was refreshing to see a nice guy as the lead, one who is willing to take things at the heroine's pace. Be warned that the book does. It off rather abruptly to open up for a sequel. I don't know the author's plans for it, obviously, but I am wondering if it would've worked better as a standalone novel.

Finding Something To Fight For
By Jennifer R. Shiels
This is a really good book. Cassidy Jameson has just transferred to a new school and is doing everything she can to do better than she first did. She went to Dartmouth her freshman year with a Hockey Scholarship and she failed completely. But she's hoping to just blend into the background, do well in school, and show that she's capable of so much more.

Cassidy feels like a huge failure and she's doing everything she can to do better. She's seeing a therapist, she's working really hard in school, and she's doing everything she can to not do anything she did the previous year. Her roomie and friend, Brooklyn, drags her to parties here and there but Cassidy doesn't drink and hangs out with her friend. Her family has shut her out and she was really close with her father before all this. He coached her and pushed her for Hockey and now he's made it clear that he doesn't want to have anything to do with her. Cole is gorgeous and doesn't shy away from showing her that he cares about her and wants to be with her. She does everything she can to push him away.

Cole comes into her life and he does everything he can to make sure she knows that he wants to be Cassidy's boyfriend. He is gorgeous and he's a hockey player. But he doesn't hook up with people, he's a relationship kind of guy. He was in a relationship until he found out that his best friend turned girlfriend cheated on him and now he has trust issues.

Definitely worth reading and looking forward to the next book - Don't Leave.

Just ok for me....
By Anonymous
I liked the storyline and I really liked The hero but absolutely could not stand the heroine. I like strong female characters and I found her to be weak, naive and stupid. I realize that she made mistakes but she didn't do anything as bad as what she carried on about the whole book (which I was absolutely sick of after 200 pages of should I or shouldn't I tell him) and then she was a victim of the rest. She also needs to tell him about other things that she was somewhat smart enough to see something bad coming but too stupid to talk to him before it blows up in her face. I doubt that I will read the next one because I can't handle characters like her. The love story was sweet but I couldn't help but think he deserved better and not because of her past but because she clearly has no common sense.

Many Errors
By TechFreak
I just finished doing a timing belt job along with the water pump and this manual is absolutely terrible. Their instructions to get to the timing belt are just flat out wrong. They skip removing the plate that goes over the outer timing belt cover and connects into the mount and they never provide the torque values for the three bolts that hold it on. They also tell you to remove the engine mount and the mount bracket. Doing that is a waste of time since you still can't get the mount out and all you really need to do is jack the engine up a lot. There are many other repairs that they just skip details on or just have the flat out wrong info. Another example would be they tell you one year battery tray is held on by 4 bolts instead of 5....wrong! My 2000 had the fifth bolt that was kind of hidden so I bent the battery tray at first (not that big a deal but the point is I paid for correct info). The procedure they give you to balance the engine on the mounts with the torque struts is also wrong. Their instruction were physically impossible on my car. The measurement they gave must be wrong.

To sum it up, don't rely on this book for any repair. It might give you some ideas about how to fix stuff but you may end up in the middle of a repair totally confused and very mad!

From the Inside Flap
The first novel to articulate the rage and pain of life in "the other America," Last Exit to Brooklyn is a classic of postwar American writing. Selby's searing portrait of the powerless, the homeless, the dispossessed, is as fiercely and frighteningly apposite today as it was when it was first published more than thirty-five years ago.

Bennies, bums and beatings
By Keith A. Comess
"Last Exit" is now around 60 years old. It's a inter-related group of short stories dealing with the "underclass" of 1950s Brooklyn, New York. It clearly stands the test of time and, to use a hackneyed term, it's a "classic" in the tradition of Burroughs, Bukowski, Ginsberg and other more famous authors of the era.

"Exit" divides into three inter-related parts. Part 1 deals with a group of neighborhood toughs, all unemployed, bored and both by habit and temperment, looking for trouble. They hang out at a local dive, a diner called, "the Greeks" (no punctuation, per the author). They avail themselves of the first opportunity for violence and seriously beat a soldier who, in their perception, slighted a local "floozy". After administering a serious beating and in true sociopathic fashion, Vinnie and friends cavalierly return to the diner and their coffee. During the course of the evening and later on, they consume prodigious quantities of gin, benzedrine (legal at the time) and weed. They berate gays but happily and unabashedly party with transvestites. In Part 2, "Strike" focus shifts to a local machine shop and the union shop steward, Harry, who has some problems of his own. He's a lazy, belligerent and foul-mouthed bum whose "work ethic" leaves something to be desired from the perspective of the union (where his fealty outweighs his shortcomings), from the machinists themselves (where his grating and affected "hail fellow, well met" approach and incessant bragging further compromise his strong-arm techniques) to the company executives who provoke a strike in an effort to rid themselves of an offensive parasite. As the strike progresses, the thugs from Part 1 leach food and alcohol from the shop steward, introduce him to the demi-monde of gay sex and eventually beat him to a bloody pulp after he attempts to seduce a neighborhood boy. Part 3 ("Landsend") is a series of vignettes featuring residents of "the Project". This section is the strongest of the three, as it perfectly captures the mood, language, mores and attitudes of a cross-section of lower-class America, both then and now. It is reminiscent in it's fealty to language and atmosphere of Roth's, "Call it Sleep", an acknowledged masterpiece set in turn-of-the (20th)-century Jewish tenement culture. Marlon Brando in the film, "On the Waterfront" also comes to mind.

It's likely that Hubert Selby, Jr.'s perspectives were well informed by his own lifestyle which blended heroin, alcohol and a singularly avant guarde/bohemian lifestyle, especially for the time. His novels were all successful ("Exit" was filmed). Due to the startlingly explicit depictions of both homosexual and heterosexual sex, parts of which were (and remain) disquieting (e.g., the gang rape concluding Part 1), "Exit" was banned as "obscene". By current standards, it remains graphic and probably (given emerging Victorian sensibilities wrapped in sharp, cool clothes and covered with currently fashionable jargon) would warrant a "trigger warning" at certain American colleges and universities. One wonders if Selby could land a university job in the present era (he served as USC writing faculty).

"Exit" is a strong, compelling, unaffected, authentic and vibrant piece of literature. It's clear depictions of 1950s Brooklyn, coupled with the frenetic writing style (idiosyncratic punctuation, reproduced in this edition, reflecting Selby's rush to convey his typewritten thoughts to paper as rapidly as possible). It's more honest than Kerouac, less contrived than Burroughs and as insightful as Bowles. What more can you ask?

Gritty view of mid-century Brooklyn
By Amazon Customer
A difficult but somehow hopeful book. The gritty nature of NYC working class (or lower) people in the forties/fifties is uncomfortable at times. But the acceptance of drag queens and others on the fringe is wonderful. Stylistically, sometimes the book felt like a novel, sometimes like a Beatnik rap, and sometimes like poetry. Not a book to read fast, but a book that keeps you thinking.

One of a kind read
By J. Vaughn
This is the second book of Selby's I've enjoyed, Requiem of a Dream was the first. I will continue to order his works, as I consider him one of the best American writers, The Room more than likely will be next. He is a very talented writer who prefers writing about characters with major character flaws, yet instead of condesending them, he allows us to see what drives them to do the things that ultimately destroy their lives, thus allowing the reader to see the tragedy and feel empathy towards them. He writes in a musical fashion, something of a cross between poetry and a typist's prose with minimal punctuation to get in the way (although that takes some getting used to).

Last Exit concerns itself with the downward spiraling lives of various "lowlifes" in NYC during the 50's. There's a transvestite drug abuser named Georgette who is in love with Vinnie, a street thug who only uses him for drugs and money. Tralala is a vain street hustler and hooker who blows her chance at a decent life, and wastes away in bars searching for the next john that will make her feel like she is as beautiful as she imagines herself again, and Harry is an unhappily married and disturbed union strike leader. During the story he discovers he is a homosexual and finds happiness in various relationships with the drag queens of a local bar. However, after the strike is over and he is broke, he is shunned by the group and destroys himself by doing a terrible thing trying to regain his lost fulfillment. Also there are quite a few short stories at the end, following various characters through their daily routines, personally my favorite part of the novel.

The stories intertwine at times, and are very graphic in language, sex, and violence, not allowing the reader to look away even in the darkest sections of the novel. It was released in 1964, and was banned in Britian for a couple of years, labeled by the government as "obscene". However, if you can look past the subject matter and read this book, I can pretty much guarantee you will grow as a person. And anyone who enjoys classic American literature and/or a good story, albeit not always with a happy ending, will find much to love here.

which finally fell apart from love and overuse
By Nancy Lindquist
Clearly written, instructive for not just making patterns, but adjustments. This is my go-to pattern advice and creation book. I am not educated in pattern design, but I am self taught and have created several pieces for myself using the old edition, which finally fell apart from love and overuse. This edition has more information. I do think it's a great place to start with your own designs, but you need to know how to sew first. It's an addition to your skills, not the tell-all book of sewing your patterns. It's just what I wanted and it's a classic for a reason. I love it so much, that I keep it close and available in my craft room at all times.

Review
"Dr. Arnold Mindell's latest work goes further than his previous Quantum Mind and lays the ground for 21st century healing. Anyone practicing medicine or needing healing today will find great value in reading it. Mindell, taking up where Carl Jung left off, has emerged as the leading expert in the uses of metaphors and concepts from quantum physics to heal the mind and psyche. This book is both an opportunity to learn psychology and how quantum physics notions offer new hope as well as a manual of operations for the psyche filled with new processes and imaginative insights." --—Fred Alan Wolf, PhD, Author of Cheating Time, Matter into Feeling, Mind into Matter, and Taking the Quantum Leap

Quantum Psychology
By Amazon Customer
I'm a retired PhD psychologist/rehabilitation therapist whose graduate work was in philsophy, science and Eastern religions. My dissertation was on Zen Meditation and the Development of Accurate Empathy. It was reprinted in many journals and published in the Aldine Annuals of Biofeedback & Neuropsychology. I'm a practicing Tibetan Buddhist, have been so for more than 20 years.

Because of my life and meditational experiences I have long been interested in the human mind -- how it works and how it is related to the universe. Mendell's book stitches together the gap between the so called soft science of psychology and the hard science of quantum physics by utilizing the quantum aspects of human thought processes to heal psychological and physical dissonances in the body and mind--leading to greater energy, creativity and excitement about life.

In spite of what might be thought of as esoteric, the book is easy to read, instructions for practice are simple, direct and easy to follow. I find the book and its reasoning sound. I do a lot of reading in both fields (theoretical quantum physics and psychology) and find nothing out of place or wrong with his thinking and practice. One of my daughters who is interested in understanding her inner mental life and how it affects her self image and family relationships finds the book very helpful, as my wife and I do.

Another exciting book by Mindell but his work is not that easy to put into practice
By Iona Main Stewart
This is another excellent book by this wonderful author. I found it fascinating but extremely abstract and difficult to put to practical use without the personal help of the author.

The book is about dreams and body symptoms and "connect medicine and psychology with the physics of nonlocality".

Mindell's tenet is that working with your dreams and body sensations "in a real and dreamlike manner" changes your body experience. He states that our awareness interacts with the subatomic realm of our body.

He talks of the force of silence, which is the force behind everything. He has found that all body movements and symptoms can be traced back to subtle "imaginary" experiences. Symptoms begin in "imaginary time", which can be felt as a subtle body signal, i.e. the force of silence.

As you can see, the subject-matter is somewhat vague and obscure, and Mindell expresses himself in his own special way.

He discusses Rainbow Medicine, by which he means multidimensional approaches in medicine.

He tells us about flickering or flirts, by which he means awareness of the tiniest, most subtle experiences. He gives us intriguing examples of some of his work with patients or acquaintances, where he asks these to focus on tiny things that catch their attention, and informs us of the insights and experiences that reveal themselves out of this.

"Immense changes can occur by our honoring the tiniest perceptions ..... There is great wisdom embedded in body sensations and symptoms."

The author provides us with many illuminating but challenging exercises. One of these is on how to use our awareness to shape-shift into different forms and other dimensions. In this exercise you may notice "several body dimensions, worlds or hyperspaces". "The body's hyperspaces are where events such as creative urges or symptoms begin." By noticing these spaces, your body symptoms may be relieved.

Mindell refers widely to Carlos Casteneda and his teacher, don Juan Matus, and this book contains a chapter on shamanism and the essence of symptoms. To Mindell, the existence of symptoms is "like a big dream indicating that we are being called to undertake a new kind of training". (Ha, ha, I have many symptoms, so this should be good news for me!) Symptoms are not opponents to be overcome but potential allies.

Re exercises, there is one on the healing effects of overtones and one on "the hyperspace of a troublesome person".

In one exercise about "dreams, symptoms, genetics", we are asked to remember the earliest dream we can, or, alternatively, our first childhood memory. The first (and only) dream I remember from my childhood was a recurrent dream I had when I was about 3. We lived in a mansion and I dreamt that I was falling from the bottom part of the long stairway, which stretched over several floors, but I always woke before I landed. My first memory was of my mother dropping me in the snow when carrying me home from the birth clinic. She picked me up and stopped a passing taxi which we took it home. When talking to my mother about this memory later in life, it turned out that she never dropped me but the incident actually happened exactly a week before I was born when she was returning home from a checkup at the birth clinic, and she herself fell. (This affected me too of course, since I was inside her, thus my belief that she had dropped me.) I was born at a big hospital in Glasgow and knew this but my memory was of coming from the birth clinic, and this was what we were actually doing, or at least my mother was. She confirmed that all the details of my memory were correct except that the incident happened a week before I was born. I sensed that both this incident and my dream had to do with my legs, and in fact I have had problems with my legs for many years, and also fell myself a couple of years ago with long-lasting consequences which have not yet been resolved.

There's a chapter about how community influences the body, one of Mindell's main themes, and one entitled "symptoms are medicine from the future". Interesting, but I fear it will take some years before CR (consensus reality) progresses so far as to understand Mindell's tenets about curing ourselves by looking into our symptoms.

To sum up, this is another exciting book by Mindell but it is by no means easy to savvy. I would recommend this book if you are open to the author's work and have good time to delve deeply into it and try out the exercises. Good luck with it!

A coming-of-age tale with a spooky twist!

Maggie McKay hardly knows what to do with herself. After an idyllic childhood of homeschooling with her mother and rough-housing with her older brothers, it's time for Maggie to face the outside world, all on her own. But that means facing high school first. And it also means solving the mystery of the melancholy ghost who has silently followed Maggie throughout her entire life. Maybe it even means making a new friend―one who isn't one of her brothers.

Funny, surprising, and tender, Friends with Boys is a pitch perfect YA graphic novel full of spooky supernatural fun.

Review

“ Easy-to-read slice-of-life action . . . . Maggie is a likable main character . . . and her anxiety about school is well portrayed, while Hicks's black and white art is sharp and comically expressive.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Friends With Boys started as a daily web comic, still available online, but was designed to work as a book and is a pleasurable read in both formats. The art is easy to follow, lively, and engaging, with plenty of effective silent moments. For all the expected family and high school angst, the book is rife with humor. Maggie is a sympathetic and likeable character and carries the story capably . . . . Hicks handles it all with warmth and aplomb.” ―VOYA

“Fun for kids who can appreciate stories about teen angst that do not wallow in depression or self-loathing.” ―Children's Literature

“The black-and-white coloring adds a nice somber tone to resonate emotional power, capturing a textual tone that moves from comedic to serious.” ―ALAN Review

“Various panel sizes are used to full advantage, creating a cinematic effect that moves from long shots to tight close-ups. Night scenes provide good contrast and heighten the dramatic tension. Excellent pacing gives pause for reflective moments and sets up the action scenes. Hicks is a master of wordless panels, using facial expressions, gestures, and character placement to effectively convey emotions that transcend words. Her artistic brilliance is especially evidenced in the character's expressive faces, particularly the eyes. . . . Originally published as a web comic, this excellent high school drama has already developed an online following. Friends with Boys will win new fans for this talented cartoonist.” ―School Library Journal

“Filling monochrome ink-and-wash panels with wonderfully mobile faces, expressively posed bodies, wordless conversations in meaningful glances, funny banter and easy-to-read visual sequences ranging from hilarious to violent, Hicks crafts an upbeat, uncommonly engaging tale rich in humor, suspense and smart, complex characters. Readers will definitely want to have, know or be Maggie's brothers--but she herself proves to be no slouch when it comes to coping with change and taking on challenges.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Hicks excels at depicting adolescent emotion and the way feelings ricochet off the actions and reactions of others, each teenager suffering a constant and confusing onslaught of hurt and acceptance, infatuation and rejection, loneliness and relief…She also shows flashes of clever humor…But what mostly emerges is a fundamentally sweet and sensitive story, one with a rare, genuine-feeling portrait of loving sibling relations.” ―The New York Times

Entertaining [3.5 Stars]
By T. Adlam
When I read the book's inside flap--a story about a homeschooled girl, Maggie McKay, going to public high school for the first time, and as if that wasn't bad enough, she's also (literally) haunted--I was completely intrigued and prepared myself to fall in love. Unfortunately, it didn't happen that way.

The artwork reminded me of a classic comic style, but updated and with manga/anime influences, and the black/white/greyscale rendering actually contributed to some of the story's bleaker themes. Each of the characters were drawn with great expression of emotion and the wise arrangement of the panels made them easy to follow, plus it was well-written and well-edited.

But as much as I wanted to love this graphic novel, at times I found the main story muddied--it came across as a disjointed telling of too many stories in too short a space--and resulted in some of the themes/characters not being too deeply explored.

Basically, Maggie's was a coming of age story which explored themes like adjusting to new situations, socializing, and self-acceptance. On top of that, she had to deal with a number of inner demons--mainly surrounding the estrangement of her mother--which shadowed her literal haunting. However, the literal haunting seemed more like a contrivance to facilitate the story's climax than an integral part of the story.

Even with that quibble, I did find the book entertaining. Maggie's story was engrossing and, as a character, she was skillfully crafted. It's unfortunate that I can't say the same of all the remaining characters (at least, not consistently), many of which lacked dimension--again, probably stemming from the trying-to-cram-too-much-in problem I mentioned earlier.

The book left various threads untied and questions unanswered (possibly to be answered in future web comics*) and when I turned the final page, although I did enjoy it, I was still a bit disappointed. I should also note that if you're expecting a horror, a supernatural chiller, or even anything remotely creepy, you won't find it in this book.

ordinary life, ordinary story but great artwork
By Yoomi
I'm torn. I fell in love with Maggie and her brothers. I would have loved friends like Lucy and Alistair in high school. But once I was finished with this graphic novel, my mind was blank. The story felt incomplete. I have too many questions. How did the haunting fit into her life? Why her? And what about the others who could see her but weren't haunted by her? Was it resolved at the end or did she just learn to accept it? Maggie questions her mother's sudden disappearance but the boys and the father just seem to accept it. Considering the father is a cop, it seems odd.

If I ignore these nagging questions, it's a great vignette of Maggie's life starting at a public high school after being homeschooled for the first part of her life. The artwork is great and I loved the detail on every page. I just wish there was more to it. I don't expect all questions to be answered in a story (they rarely are in real life, especially in high school) but I felt that these were neglected gaps in the story rather than questions that are left up to the reader to answer.

A beautiful, subtle coming-of-age story. Highly recommended.

Friends with Boys by Faith Erin Hicks

While Image is my favorite major publisher of monthly comic titles, First Second is my favorite publisher with a small output of high quality graphic novels, using the term in a very limited sense to refer to comic books that are complete, unified novels either issued at a single point with no previous monthly issues OR trade collections of monthly issues clearly designed to be complete, sustained narrative stories with thematic coherence (such as Watchmen and Daytripper). Friends with Boys is another excellent First Second graphic novel aimed at YA, and though I certainly recommend this title for a YA audience, I suggest that it will be best appreciated by an adult reader who is willing to read this fast-paced tale very slowly in order to take in fully its visual and thematic subtleties.

The story opens as Maggie is about to start ninth grade, her first year of high school. And since she has been homeschooled by her mother, she has never been to a public school and is very nervous the morning of her first day. Her father is a good-natured, long-haired police officer, and Maggie seems close to both him and her three older brothers, all of whom were also homeschooled before starting in public school in the ninth grade. Maggie has two other problems in addition to her stress over starting high school — her mother has left the family after finishing her homeschooling duties for four children, and Maggie blames herself for being too much of a tomboy and never wanting to spend as much time with her mother as she wanted to spend with her father and brothers. Maggie's second problem is that she is haunted by a ghost.

I fear that this graphic novel will be too easily passed up for the very reasons that make it such an excellent work of literature. First, the art is just plain beautiful to look at, but its primary function — as it should be — is to tell the story. And since the story acts as a character study of a young girl coming of age, the art focuses on subtle body language and facial expressions. It does such a good job that the novel takes only about an hour to read. Second, the writing is so smooth, there's nothing to slow a reader down. I couldn't stop reading it. I didn't put it down once last night. But now, the next morning as I write this review, I'm ready to read it again in order to appreciate the art on a panel-by-panel basis.

The other reason this novel could easily be overlooked is that its greatness comes in subtle moments and in a series of thematically significant anti-climatic moments. For example, Maggie's coming to terms with her mother's departure is not depicted dramatically — it's based on a few quiet scenes, and her ultimate acceptance of the situation is largely internal and thus only hinted at. Her situation with the ghost escalates, but that problem also resolves itself quietly, as it must, given the author's view of life: Our lives change slowly, almost imperceptively, in ways we almost fail to notice ourselves. In other words, Maggie's external situation in the world hardly changes from page one of the novel to the last page. Yet, at the same time, from her perspective, everything has changed because she sees herself and her brothers in a different light.

Most of the novel involves Maggie's meeting Lucy, a young girl her age, and Lucy's older brother. They dress a bit punk and are ostracized by the high school in-crowd — the school's volleyball team in this Canadian small town. As Maggie makes friends with them, the story's most realistic aspect is made clear: When we enter a social group for the first time, we don't understand how everyone connects — who likes whom, who used to get along with whom, who is kind, who is popular, and who has specific resentments. And that's Maggie's experience: She tries to figure out how her two new friends fit in at the school and what her brothers think of them and why.

Maggie also finds out how her brothers are viewed publicly, what their social roles are, as she tries to establish her own place in this new school. Once again, the author is subtle — we catch Maggie spotting a fleeting look her brother gives her new friends and watch her puzzled look in response to the cryptic facial expression of a brother she thought she knew well. These moments are at the heart of everyday life, and Faith Erin Hicks bases her entire story on those expressions and other subtle aspects of very pedestrian human interaction — and that's the genius of the work.

Friends with Boys is a wonderful break from the superhero and crime novels I love — it's enjoyable to read a work that lacks in drama and major events. It makes me see my own life differently, as is often the result of reading the best literature. This novel is a gem that you should buy for your children, particularly if they are in 7th through 10th grade, I would guess. After that, I'm afraid they might not enjoy it again until they are much older. On the surface, it deals with making friends, not judging others, and having crushes. However, no couples even date or kiss in the story; we just see sweet smiles on faces as girls are touched by the kindness of high school boys when they rise above petty behavior. But these typical ethical points are presented as subtly as everything else in the novel, and this subtlety will be appreciated most by adults who give this book the attention it deserves. I really can't recommend this book enough. I can't wait to read more by this author.
