A weirdly fascinating and truly enjoyable read!

D K Cassidy explores the lives of characters first introduced in her previous book, “Spilt Milk”. The characters are all deeply disturbed individuals, but the author artfully weaves in enough detail to make those people real. The writing is clean, simple prose that sometimes borders on poetry, and, by switching into each character’s point of view, we see some of their motivations, why they are so disturbed and separated from the world around them. Scenes in several of the stories, beginning in the first, border on magical realism and I found myself glad the author didn’t make clear whether or not those events were real, or the imaginings of a disturbed mind; Author D K Cassidy's prose is an excellent example of the “less is more” rule. The characters and events are fleshed out so well they’ll stay with you long after the book has been read. This is a five-star read that I highly recommend to readers of any genre!

Inspirational, Haiku-esque Writing

Having read D. K. Cassidy before, I know what an amazing writer she is. But this time, while consuming her newest book, “Curious Reality,” I instinctively started to analyze the depth of this author’s power and why she ‘speaks’ to me.

Using unique, haunting, and an almost Haiku-esque prose, she manages to bring a true authenticity to her characters and their various mental issues. Whether it be hallucinations or bizarre obsessions leftover from childhood abuse, or simply part of life’s inevitable scars, in her insightful hands, she catapults us all to dark places––places that may horrify you, but at the same time, pull at your heart strings. And as she intertwines these characters together into some form of dysfunctional network, she always, ALWAYS makes you think on a more profound, soulful level. Inspirational...

Brilliant Read!

Let me start by saying, I preordered it, got it this morning and had it read by noon - yes, it's that good! Now for the more formal review!

Curious Reality by D.K. Cassidy continues to explore the lives of characters introduced in her earlier work, Spilt Milk. While I recommend you start with Spilt Milk, it isn't necessary to do so to enjoy and understand the current offering.

The recurring characters (Caleb, Joy, and George) all lead rather dysfunctional lives that curiously intersect. In this read, Joy discovers she has a special talent; Caleb makes some decisions about life; and George may just find his soul mate. Of course, in Cassidy's version of reality, all of these events are just slightly twisted and off-balance which is what makes her work so original and thought -provoking.

Spilt Milk was, by far, the best book I read in 2014 and, as a follow-up, Curious Reality does not disappoint. Ms. Cassidy's writing is sparse - there are no wasted words - and each word she uses is very carefully chosen for maximum impact. The result is a gripping read, with characters and situations that border on the bizarre and tease at the corners of your mind.

Thank you, Ms. Cassidy for another brilliant journey into a new version of reality. Can't wait to see what you come up with next! Most highly recommended - Five big, bright, shiny stars!

Hot but...

The book was really hot and I loed the characters. But I am a little confused abut one thing. It seems like the Black Aces are more of a background thing. I mean, I personally like it when the romance is front and center, but I guess I was just a bit disappointed that all the MC action came towards the end of the book.

One star was a compliment

The main characters were all weak-minded. I could've handled maybe one or two, but all four? No. This man let this child cheat on her significant other with him for a year? She wanted to continue the affair after she got married because she "loved" him. True bulls***. And then the story tried to make her dad out to be the bad guy when he asked if she had any morals. He shouldn't have called her a whore, but her morals are very questionable. I felt so bad for Terry. The other love story between Treble and Lindy was okay, but still shaky. If it was just a love story about them, it might have gotten a higher rating from me, but the switching back and forth was unnecessary, especially between sisters.
Overall: the plot line was less than desirable and the writing style was meh. I skimmed through it because I could not stand Bridgett.

Don't believe the hype

This book was just a complete flop for me. It had no story line and the characters were absolutely vile, Bridget was probably the worst character I have ever read. So she cheats on a great guy their entire relationship, breaks up with him in front of her family days before the wedding then has the wedding but inserts a different groom??? What? And who would go to that mess anyway. Also how horrible is it to leave someone after cheating on them and then dad buys the tickets to the honeymoon he planned back? I don't care how good of a person you are no one would respond like Terry did. The most ridiculous part of the book however was when her sister Lindy caught her having sex and instead of immediately turning away disgusted, she watches and talks to her boyfriend about how sexy her sister is and the look of ecstasy on her face. No. The only way this book could be worse if one or both of them ended up pregnant at the end. Seriously stay away.

Great reads - all of them

I enjoyed all the stories. This line of Harlequin has more story to go with the love story! I've read others in the "Colton" series, will look for others in the "Mansfield" family and loved Lethal Lies. I have the Lone Star duo in separate books - so far so good.

Colton Holiday Lockdown: A little hard to follow what was happening at first - once I read a bit more I very much enjoyed it. It was interesting to see how a "good" person can turn out to be so bad! Nice second chance at love and life tale.

The Mansfield Rescue: You can go home again! Even if you are a kick-butt smoke jumper and former kicker for the high school team and a girl! And meet your former teammate's older brother.....

Lethal Lies: Very interesting! The doctor and the undercover FBI agent with an enemy trying to take him down....

Lone Star Survivor - reading that one now in a separate book. Looks very good so far....

Lamm (The Virility Solution, Thinner at Last), a practicing internist and expert on male sexual health, insists there is a direct link between the quality of a man’s overall health and the quality of his erections. Just as physicians can measure a patient’s blood pressure and percentage of body fat, Lamm claims he can measure the strength of a man’s erections (The Hardness Factor) using a new computerized device invented by a Spanish urologist. He is, therefore, not just interested in whether or not a guy can get hard during sex, but how hard. No wonder he’s such a popular guest on women’s talk shows like Oprah and The View. It is this ability to measure hardness that allows Lamm to argue it can be improved in six weeks. The program outlined in the book is heavily focused on diet and exercise with the use of a few key supplements (Pycnogenol, L-Arginine, omega-3 fatty acids, Niacin, Vitamins C and E, and Horny Goat Weed). While there is a place for prescription drugs like Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis, Lamm believes these should generally be reserved for those with more serious health problems limiting their ability to achieve erections, such as diabetes, heart disease, and the aftermath of prostate cancer surgery. Lamm's premise is that for men, good health and a hard erection are synonymous. Hardness (or rather, lack thereof) is not just an inevitable side effect of aging, internist Lamm claims—it's the result of poor lifestyle decisions and is linked to a number of afflictions, including obesity, high cholesterol, hypertension, depression and heart disease. The author, medical correspondent for ABC's The View and an early researcher of Viagra, points out that prescription medications aren't always the answer. He outlines a six-week program that focuses on diet, exercise and supplements such as Pycnogenol/L-Arginine, a combination of antioxidant and pine-bark extract that reduces the risk of chronic diseases and results in a "rock-hard erection." Lamm peppers his straightforward text with jokes and entertaining anecdotes from patients at his New York City practice. He estimates that 20 million men aged 40 to 70 suffer from erectile dysfunction. While many never seek treatment, perhaps they will pick up this important book, which is filled with several new insights and tips for maintaining sexual and general health. (June 1)

The Hardness Factor is the Blood Flow Factor...

This book serves a useful purpose by putting this message very much in the face of men: erections are produced by blood flow; if you want better erections and improved sexual health, there are no shortcuts that bypass the need for better health.

It's well documented now that aerobic exercise improves erections, weight loss improves erections, proper rest and proper hormone balance...all improve erections. I've found many men become motivated to lose weight, walk, and quit smoking when their sexual function begins to wane. This book should help motivate and instruct men to better health by linking health to sexual function.

Dr. Lamm's a big fan of L-arginine at a dose of 3 grams per day. Arginine and glutamine boost growth hormone levels in those with a healthy pituitary and lead to improved circulation and better erections. I've found patients do better with glutamine than with arginine (glutamine causes less nausea and can be taken at a higher dosage): try (if your doctor approves) 12 grams per day (best taken as a powder mixed in water since 12 grams would be 24 tablets at 500 mg each) for best source, see my list "Libido, Erection, and Premature Ejaculation."

The most important recommendation in the book is walking. There is no doubt now that walking (or jogging..but not necessary to jog) does more to prevent obesity and to improve and maintain sexual function than anything possible with diet.

I haven't seen as much success with the counting-steps method as outlined by Dr. Lamm as I have with those who just go walking and count miles, but the basic idea that walking improves sexual function cannot be ignored. Not only does the practice improve circulation and firmness of erection but alters levels of seratonin, dopamine, endorphins, cortisol, thyroid, growth hormone, and testosterone in ways that support libido and sexual function.

Dr. Lamm makes the point that hormone levels should be optimized (even mentions their replacement in women). This problem is much more common that previously suspected.

As to the "erection drugs" discussed, the recommendation to start with Viagra, Levitra, or Cialis and only go to the use of Muse (an injectable) might be questioned. Dr. Lamm fails to mention that Muse may also be used as a suppository and has a safer side-effect profile than Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis (and in some may even prolong erection after ejaculation).

Dr. Lamm completely leaves out the use of prescription-strength yohimbine (Yocon) which has good effect on erection in 10-20% of men with the added benefit of increasing libido (which the others do not). Yocon has it's own side effect of irritability and increasing blood pressure in some...still it's a wonder drug for some and adds improved libido even to those who may use Viagra or one of the other medicines. So, I was disappointed it was left out of the discussion (but then I'm also prone to favor products found in nature...of which yohimbine is one).

The foods recommended by Dr. Lamm should be helpful and healthful. For quicker, easier, and similar results...I'd recommend "the Abs Diet, Eat Right Every Time" by Zinczenco. Start with the paperback version of this book and buy the hardback as addition if you want to better understand the underlying science.

Don't think Tantric sex got the press it deserved in a book on hardness (short paragraph with no mention of the man's cycle as discussed in the Tao).

Admittedly, these are comments that have more to do with the art of medicine and plainly Dr. Lamm and I may not bake a cake in the same way...but the main point of the book (that good health results in good sex and there are specific ways to improve health and sex simultaneously) is a point worth repeatedly making. Good sex is the cherry on top; it's the side effect of good physical, emotional, and relationship health. Dr. Lamm will motivate many to better health in all of these areas with his excellent book.

About the Author
DWIGHT L. MOODY (1837-1899) was a highly acclaimed late 19th century evangelist. He founded the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago in 1886 and the Bible Institute Colportage Association, now Moody Publishers, in 1894. Only Through Christ Will We Overcome!

Moody has written a gem that will continue to bless long after his death over 100 years ago. The gist of the book is an inspiration to overcome internal and external obstacles through Christ's strength to be an overcomer.

Among the important points covered in the book include:

1. It is folly for a person to fight in the flesh. God will not abandon us in time of need. A godly person must learn to stand alone.

2. People wrapped up in pleasure have no time for meditation.

3. God wants us to use the influence we have for His glory. A person's influence lives on after the person dies.

4. Rare is the person who follows Christ in meekness and humility. You cannot counterfeit humility. We will not be disappointed when we humble ourselves before the Lord.

5. One of Christ's prominent virtures is His humility.

6. Rest cannot be found in the world - we will get rest only at the foot of the cross.

7. We have the privilege of casting our burdens on Jesus.

8. The way of obedience is always the way of blessing.

While this gem is little known compared to other Christian titles, it will nonetheless bless and encourage you.

GET THIS WHILE YOU CAN

I have been a great fan of D.L. Moody. Any new Christian will benefit from reading this book. From the first chapter to the last he goes through the Bible and just brings out simple truths that will help any Christian live a victorious life. I love how he takes you right into the Bible times through his illustrative Bible stories. This book is a great blessing and I wish I could have enough to give out as gifts.

This is a great book for any Christian looking to improve their walk with God. I would recomend it to new Christians and to those struggling in thrie walk.

About the Author
David Petersen was born in 1977. His artistic career soon followed. A steady diet of cartoons, comics and tree climbing fed his imagination and is what still inspires his work today. He is a three time Eisner Award winner for his work on his Mouse Guard series. David received his BFA in Printmaking from Eastern Michigan University where he met his wife Julia. They continue to reside in Michigan with their dogs Autumn and Bronwyn
