DEV RAHEJA is President of Raheja Consulting, Inc. For over thirty years, he has served clients in numerous industries, including aerospace, medical devices, auto, and consumer products. Raheja is also the coauthor of Assurance Technologies Principles and Practices, Second Edition (Wiley).

LOUIS J. GULLO is Senior Principal Systems Engineer at Raytheon Missile Systems in Tucson, Arizona. A retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel, Gullo has more than thirty years' experience in military, space, and commercial programs. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE and Chair of the IEEE Reliability Society Standards Committee.

Learn from the experts

The subject of design for reliability is getting more and more attention in companies. This is a positive trend, as it is the best way to achieve high reliability, in a low-cost and fast-to-market environment. "Design for Reliability" makes a significant contribution to the field of reliability engineering. It does it in an interesting and effective way, which I will explain.

I strongly believe that learning any subject is a lifelong path, and we can always learn more. There is no better way to learn than from people who are experts in the field. Even though I consider myself well-experienced in the subject matter, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I picked up about the DFR subject from this book.

One of the hard lessons I have encountered during my 30 years of experience in reliability engineering and management is that no one person is an expert in the length and breadth of reliability and its tools. Most experienced reliability professionals are expert in a segment of the field, and understand generally the entire field. "Design for Reliability" identifies the key subject areas, and then enlists experts to write the specific chapters. Each chapter provides the reader with authoritative analysis of one segment of designing for reliability, including application insights and an overview of the fundamentals. The value to the reader is learning the subject from people who have extensive experience in both the theory and application of DFR in their respective field of expertise. This is not a theoretical book with long equations and derivations. It is a practical book that makes each design-for-reliability topic accessible to readers, regardless of whether they are new to the subject or experienced practitioners.
